GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading certification for organic fibers and textiles worldwide. It is a comprehensive standard that ensures organic textiles meet strict criteria throughout the entire supply chain, from raw materials to finished products. GOTS-certified products are made from at least 70% organic fibers and meet specific environmental and social criteria.

The GOTS certification aims to support the growth of organic agriculture, promote sustainable practices in the textile industry, and provide consumers with products they can trust. It ensures that textiles are not only produced using organic fibers but also meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility, social fairness, and product safety.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a trusted and widely recognized certification for textiles that ensures organic fibers, environmentally responsible manufacturing, and fair labor practices. By promoting organic agriculture and minimizing the environmental impact of textile production, GOTS helps create a sustainable, ethical, and transparent supply chain. For consumers, choosing GOTS-certified products guarantees that the textiles are safe, high-quality, and made with respect for both people and the planet.

For businesses, obtaining GOTS certification not only enhances brand reputation and marketability but also supports the growing demand for organic and ethically produced textiles, contributing to a more sustainable future.

  • Clothing and Apparel: Many clothing brands use GOTS certification to offer sustainable and eco-friendly products, such as organic cotton T-shirts, organic wool sweaters, and natural dye fabrics.
  • Bedding and Home Textiles: GOTS is commonly applied to home textiles, including organic cotton sheets, blankets, towels, and curtains, ensuring that these products are made with environmentally friendly processes and organic materials.
  • Furniture and Upholstery: Furniture manufacturers use GOTS certification for cushions, sofas, and other upholstered items to ensure that the fabrics meet organic standards and are produced responsibly.
  • Footwear: Some footwear brands offer GOTS-certified shoes made with organic cotton, wool, and other sustainable materials, ensuring that both the materials and production processes meet the high standards of organic and ethical certification.
  • Organic Fiber Requirements: For a textile product to be GOTS certified, a minimum of 70% of the fabric must be made from certified organic fibers. The remaining 30% may come from conventional fibers, but there are strict guidelines on the use of chemical inputs in the manufacturing process.
  • Environmental Criteria: GOTS focuses on minimizing the environmental impact of textile production. This includes regulating the use of toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process, promoting water conservation, and reducing waste. All chemical inputs used in the production of GOTS-certified textiles must meet stringent safety standards.
  • Social Criteria: GOTS also takes into account social criteria that ensure fair labor practices, workers’ rights, and safe working conditions. This includes prohibiting child labor, ensuring safe and hygienic working conditions, and guaranteeing fair wages for workers throughout the supply chain.
  • Processing and Manufacturing: GOTS certification covers the entire textile supply chain, from the production of raw materials (e.g., organic cotton, wool) to the processing (spinning, weaving, dyeing) and finishing stages. This ensures that the product is consistently organic and environmentally friendly at every stage of production.
  • Product Quality and Safety: GOTS-certified textiles must meet strict quality standards, ensuring that they are safe for consumers to use. This includes testing for harmful substances and ensuring that the final product is free from hazardous chemicals like pesticides, heavy metals, and toxic dyes.
  • Transparency and Traceability: One of the key aspects of GOTS certification is the ability to trace the entire production process of a textile. This ensures transparency and allows consumers to trust that the product they are buying has been produced according to rigorous organic and ethical standards.
  •
  • Environmental Protection: GOTS-certified products help reduce the environmental impact of textile production. The standard restricts the use of harmful chemicals, promotes water and energy conservation, and encourages waste reduction, making it a more sustainable choice for consumers.
  • Consumer Confidence: The GOTS certification provides consumers with confidence that the products they are purchasing are made from organic materials and manufactured under socially responsible conditions. It also ensures that the product is free from harmful chemicals and is safe for use.
  • Ethical Manufacturing: GOTS ensures that the workers in the textile supply chain are treated fairly. The standard requires manufacturers to adhere to fair labor practices, such as providing safe working conditions, ensuring fair wages, and preventing child labor.
  • Marketability: For manufacturers, obtaining GOTS certification is a way to differentiate their products in the marketplace. As demand for sustainable and ethically produced textiles increases, GOTS certification provides a competitive advantage by showcasing a commitment to organic and responsible practices.
  • International Recognition: GOTS is recognized globally as the leading certification for organic textiles. It is accepted by retailers, manufacturers, and consumers across many countries, making it a valuable certification for companies that wish to access international markets.
  • Support for Organic Agriculture: By using organic fibers, GOTS-certified products support organic farming, which reduces the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, promotes biodiversity, and improves soil health.

There are two levels of GOTS certification based on the organic fiber content of the textile:

  1. GOTS Certified – Organic: This certification is for textiles that contain at least 95% organic fibers. These products are considered fully organic and meet the highest GOTS standards for both environmental and social criteria.
  2.  GOTS Certified – Made with Organic: This certification is for textiles that contain at least 70% organic fibers. While the product is not fully organic, it still meets the environmental and social criteria required for GOTS certification

  • Application: The first step in obtaining GOTS certification is to apply to an approved certification body. The application should include details about the products, the production process, and the supply chain.
  • Audit and Inspection: A certification body will conduct a thorough audit of the facility and supply chain to ensure that the business complies with GOTS criteria. This may involve onsite inspections, reviewing documentation, and sampling products for testing.
  • Compliance with Standards: The company must demonstrate compliance with both the environmental and social standards of GOTS. This includes maintaining records of chemical use, ensuring fair labor practices, and proving that the textile products meet organic fiber content requirements.
  • Certification: Once the company has passed the audit, the certification body issues the GOTS certification. The company can then use the GOTS logo on its products and marketing materials to indicate that the textiles meet the rigorous organic and ethical standards.
  • Ongoing Audits: GOTS certification is not a one-time process. Regular audits and inspections are required to maintain certification, ensuring that the company continues to meet GOTS standards and that any changes in the manufacturing process are in compliance.
